A hernia is a medical condition when your abdominal organ gets dislocated and pushes out through the muscle or tissue opening, which is responsible for holding it back into place. The peritoneal defect facilitates the pushing of the organs and tissues through the herniate, which results in the form of a bulge.
There are four basic types of hernia
Groin
It is a form of a femoral hernia, which results in a bulge formation below the groin.
Hernia of the Upper Stomach
A hiatus hernia is a type of hernia caused when your upper stomach is pushed out from the abdominal cavity through the diaphragm into the chest region.
Belly Button
A bulge in your belly button region is the result of an umbilical or periumbilical hernia formation.
Surgical Scar
This type of hernia is the outcome of your abdominal surgery.
Hernia Symptoms
- In most of the cases, the occurrence of hernia may remain as a painless swelling leading to no problem and hence requires no immediate medical attention.
- However, your hernia may make you feel discomfort with visible symptoms when you stand, strain, bend or lift some bulky items. Most people who suffer from soreness or swelling will eventually feel the need to consult a doctor.
- Inguinal hernia may produce acute abdominal complaints such as vomiting, nausea, pain, and abdominal bulge.
- In such cases, your swelling may be firm and tender, which cannot be pushed back through the abdominal opening.
- A hiatal hernia can result in symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, etc.
