Top Benefits of Weight Loss Surgery Besides Losing Weight

One of the easiest ways of losing weight is to eat less but those who have a habit of eating more are unable to do so. This is where a Bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery, as it is better known as, comes into play. The prime objective of this surgery is to make people eat less and yet give them the feeling of being full and which in turn help individuals lose weight.

Bariatric surgery is a last resort for obese people to lose weight whose other resorts at losing weight have failed. Bariatric surgery reduces the stomach’s capacity to store food as much as it used to earlier.

There are many types of weight-loss surgeries available, including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric plication, gastric bypass, and gastric banding. Depending on the medical history and the current health conditions, the surgery is determined by an experienced doctor regarding which one would be the best course of action.

Doctors say that people who have a BMI of 35 or more need to lose more than 65 pounds. Those who do not make changes in their diet and lifestyle may suffer from serious health issues. Most people with a BMI of 40 or more are candidates for weight loss surgery in India.

Diet Changes after Bariatric Surgery

After weight-loss surgery, most patients tend to have issues adjusting to the dietary changes which are made as their stomach becomes smaller than before. They need to eat small portions, slowly, and are advised not to consume fluids thirty minutes before or after their meal. However, with time, people gradually adjust to these changes. Also, after the surgery, patients are advised vitamins and supplements by a nutritionist.

Benefits of Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery helps individuals lose weight to a great extent. It is especially beneficial for those who need to lose 65 pounds or more but are not able to do so using natural methods. This is because less than five per cent of people can maintain their weight for five years or more. Most people gain back the weight they had lost in less than a year.

There are several benefits of a weight loss surgery, a few of which are as follows -
  • Keeps a check on Type 2 Diabetes - Recent studies prove that weight loss surgery helps in keeping a check on Type 2 diabetes. It is so beneficial that patients who have Type 2 diabetes and opt for a Bariatric surgery can remain free of insulin for three years after the surgery.
  • Better Cardiovascular Health - Decrease in weight leads to several cardiovascular health benefits such as stroke, coronary heart disease along with normal blood and cholesterol levels.
  • Relief from Depression - Most people suffering from obesity do not feel confident about themselves. They prefer keeping to themselves instead of participating in activities with other people, and this includes people of young age as well, which eventually leads to depression, anxiety, and more. Weight loss surgery in India thus helps in improving the emotional well-being of patients.

Know All About Fissure Surgery

A fissure is a small cut or tear which occurs in the lining of the anus. This condition occurs majorly due to the passage of hard stools and may cause severe pain and bleeding during and after bowel movements. Though most of the fissures aren't severe and heal with time, some of them do not heal even after months. These non-healing fissures require surgery. The primary purpose of fissure surgery is to make the anal sphincter muscle relax. This helps to ease the pain and allows the fissure to heal.

There are two kinds of fissure surgery procedures. The first type involves injecting botox, or a muscle relaxer into the sphincter muscle. This botox is injected in the internal part of the sphincter muscle, making the muscle relax and thereby healing the fissure.

Another type of fissure surgery is Sphincterotomy. In this fissure surgery procedure, the anal sphincter muscle gets a minor cut. This helps to release the tension and heal the fissure.

Before beginning these fissure surgery procedures, bowel preparation is carried out to empty the intestines of stool. These procedures are usually carried out as a day-case procedure in a hospital. So, patients need not get admitted and can go back home on the same day.

Post-surgery, this bath is recommended at least 3-4 times in a day and post every bowel movement to ease muscle spasms pain. Patients who have undergone fissure surgery are also prescribed pain relief medicines and antibiotics. It is important to complete the course of these medicines.

The recovery period varies from patient to patient. Generally a few days after the surgery, patients can resume their normal daily routine. However, complete healing would take about 6 to 10 weeks.
