Symptoms and Prevention of Liver Disease

In the human body, the liver sits right below the rib cage on the right-hand side and is the size of a football. It is a very important organ which helps our body get rid of toxins.

Diseases of the liver can be due to genetic reasons or viruses and alcohol abuse. These days, obesity is another big cause associated with liver diseases as has been found by the top liver transplant hospitals in India. Gradually, increasing damage to the liver lead to cirrhosis which if left untreated can lead to liver failure and eventually becomes a life-threatening condition.

Symptoms

Some of the symptoms of liver disease include -
  • Nausea
  • Dark urine colour
  • Pale coloured stool
  • Skin becomes itchy
  • Predominant fatigue
  • Lack of desire to eat
  • Yellowish skin and eyes
  • Swollen legs and ankles
  • Tendency to bruise easily
  • Pain and swelling of the abdomen

Prevention

Top ways to prevent liver disease are as follows -
  • Taking Prescribed Medicines: Only those medications should be taken which have been prescribed by the doctor. Under no circumstances should medicines and alcohol be mixed. If you take any kind of herbal supplements or non-prescription drugs, then you must consult your doctor before taking them.
  • Having Sex Responsibly: Individuals should always wear a condom when having sex. When deciding to have tattoos, the cleanliness and safety of the tattoo parlour should be double-checked. Further, needles should not be shared and illicit drugs should be avoided at all costs.
  • Limiting Alcohol Content: Women are allowed to have one drink a day, while men can have two. Anything more than eight drinks per week for women and fifteen drinks for men can be fatal.
  • Getting Vaccinated: A doctor must be consulted at the soonest possible in case of patients who are at risk of contracting hepatitis or have been infected by it in any form. Getting Hepatitis A and B vaccines administered can be of great help in avoiding liver infections.
