All Misconceptions about Bariatric Surgery

Obesity is a major health issue in the world, and it has highly affected the westernized people as they follow a diet which mostly includes unhealthy food.

Obesity can be brought under control by regular exercise and a healthy and leafy diet, but it doesn’t always work. So, for a person with extreme obesity to lose weight surgery is performed on the stomach or intestines. This procedure is known as ‘Bariatric Surgery’. People who have a body mass index (BMI) above 40 or 35 usually undergo this surgery. There are many hospitals who perform bariatric surgery in India.

There are further two types of bariatric surgery:

·   Restrictive surgery- The size of the stomach is physically restricted to slow down digestion.

·  Malabsorptive/restrictive surgeries- Size of the stomach is restricted as well as there is a removal of parts of the digestive tract that interfere with the absorption of calories.

Yet, there are many misconceptions about this surgery as follows:

1.‘Usually everyone who had a metabolic and bariatric surgery regains their weight’.
In some cases, patients gain a small amount of weight up to 5% after two to three years of surgery, but the weight gain is nothing when compared to the weight loss due to the surgery in the long run.

2.‘The chances of dying from bariatric surgery are more than dying from obesity.’
As per some reports, it is stated that the chances of dying after the surgery are one in a thousand approximately. But due to obesity, there is a chance of catching a deadly disorder like hypertension, etc.

3.‘Several bariatric patients convert to alcoholics after the surgery.’
Most people turn to alcohol because they have had previous experience with alcohol abuse.

4.‘The surgery tends to create suicidal tendencies.’
People who are obese sometimes suffer from depression and anxiety, which might be the reason for suicidal nature. After and before the surgery, many hospitals offer therapy to patients.

 5. ‘Bariatric surgery patients suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies.’
In some instances, it might happen, but the patients are provided with necessary supplements and a nutrient-filled dietary plan.
